Wash by hand
Warm water, mild soap, a soft cloth. Rinse the blade and the handle. Never soak it.
Care
A Shun edge is thin by design. Wash it by hand, dry it at once, cut on wood, and store it protected. That is most of it. Sharpening is free for life.
Daily care
Heat, detergent, and a drawer full of metal will undo a fine edge faster than cooking ever will. These four habits take about a minute a day.
Warm water, mild soap, a soft cloth. Rinse the blade and the handle. Never soak it.
Dry at once with a towel, then leave it out for a few minutes before storing. No air drying in a sink.
Wood or soft plastic. Glass, stone, and ceramic boards are the quickest way to dull a thin edge.
A block, a magnetic strip, or a saya. Do not let one knife rest against another in a drawer.
Warranty
Shun knives carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. If a handle separates or a blade fails because of how it was made, we will repair or replace it.
The warranty does not cover normal wear, accidental damage, misuse, or improper care. Drop it, put it in a dishwasher, or use it as a pry bar, and that is on the knife, not the workshop. Registration is encouraged but not required. You do not need a receipt to ask us a warranty question.
Every warranty claim is reviewed individually. Email photos of the knife and a short description of what happened, and we will tell you what comes next.
Care questions
How long a Shun stays sharp, where to store it, and how to tell a genuine knife from a copy.
Ask us directlyA home cook who uses a knife daily, honed weekly, can often go six to twelve months between sharpenings. A busy professional kitchen will need it more often. Honing realigns an edge; it does not remove steel or replace sharpening. When a tomato skin resists and honing no longer helps, it is time for a sharpening.
Dry, protected, and not loose in a drawer. A knife block, a magnetic strip with the spine facing the magnet, or a saya all work. Never store a Shun wet, and do not let one knife rest against another. The edge is thin by design, and a drawer full of utensils will find it.
Buy from shop.shun-cutlery.com/buy. A genuine Shun has an even grind, crisp Damascus layers, a centred logo, and a handle that meets the bolster without a gap. If a knife arrives without Shun packaging or the edge looks uneven, email [email protected] with photos and your order number and we will take a look.
